Math Bowling

Image
Just a quick post from an activity we did this afternoon. We have started subtraction and today we went bowling to help us understand this concept. There were 3 students at each station,  a scorekeeper, a bowl er, and a  bumper.   The  score keeper used the recording sheet to rec ord , the bowler  was  t he friend taking a turn to  bowl , and the bum per sat behind the " pins" to catch the ball.  Students rotated  rol es after each friend bowled. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and were learning at the same time. I love it when those two things are combined. sorry about this picture being blurry but its an action shot The bowler, the score keeper and the bumper waiting to see how many she knocked down now to figure out how many are knocked down, and how many are left

Our chapel buddies helped us with a STEM project to make a square pumpkin.  They used straws, pipe cleaners, construction paper and tape to figure out how do construct their pumpkin. It was so exciting to see all the different ways the students created. Below are just a few pictures but you might want to check out Mrs. Weiss' blog for 7th grade too. trying to figure out where to start both ages working to figure it out getting closer 2 sides are connected working hard finished project Look at those square pumpkins happy to see chapel buddies all three made one Chapel buddies rock we did it STEM challenge complete

SVSU field trip

Image
We had a lot of fun at SVSU but I think a big highlight was riding the bus there. First graders were able to participate in two different sessions while there. The first one was lead by college students who are going into the education field. The SVSU students had some great activities for the students and talked to them about general space and personal space. The second session the students were mixed in with 3rd and 4th grade and placed into small groups where they practices a skill and then rotated around to the next one. The day ended with some parachute fun.

visit to listen to sound

Image
In science we have been learning all about sound. We talked about how sound comes from objects that vibrate.  We learned what vibrate, pitch and volume mean by doing some hands on labs with rulers and straws. The students discovered that if they put their lips together and blow air their lips vibrate and make sound! This led into our lesson about instruments and how they make sound. One day we went to listen to the Bethlehem band and Mrs. Weiss talked to us about some of the instruments. She demonstrated how they make sound and let us feel vibrations from the drum and cymbal.

Chapel buddies

Image
Welcome to the First grade blog. Here I will share with you pictures of the students to try to give you a glimpse into their learning. First graders are chapel buddies with 7th graders which means each student is paired with 1-2 seventh graders to attend certain chapel gatherings with. The 7th grader is the example for the 1st grader. The chapel buddies really form a bond and its so cute to see 1st graders get excited when their buddy walks through the door on Wednesdays. There will be times when Mrs. Weiss, the 7th grade teacher and myself plan activities outside of chapel for the buddies to spend time together. Below is one of those times, they played board games together and got to know each other a little better. Ask your child about their chapel buddy.
